The Pennridge Education Association's membership has given its leaders the authority to call for a strike vote if negotiations do not move forward in the near future.
More than 300 PEA members gathered Wednesday and heard a presentation from the negotiating team on the current state of contract talks. After the presentation, a motion came from the floor to give the leadership the authority to call for a strike vote. A secret ballot was held and the motion passed overwhelmingly.
"This does not mean a strike is imminent," said Jamie Vinci, PEA president. "It means that our members are frustrated with the slow pace of talks and are upset that the board seems to want us to move backward in compensation."
Vinci noted that state law requires a 48-hour notice for a teacher strike, and she said PEA will abide by that.
"I don't want a strike, and neither do the members," said Vinci. "All we are really doing here is trying to send the board a message to come to the table and work out a fair deal for everyone. I hope the board is listening and wants the same thing."
In the meantime, Vinci said, "teachers will carry on with their regular duties."
